"You are new here aren't you?"
Experiencing Berlin
Tuesday, July 15, 2008
Today we toured the Berliner Dom (pictured below). It was absolutely breathtaking. Literally breathtaking because we climbed the circular stair cases all the way to the very very top, but also breathtakingly gorgeous!
An absolutely beautiful cathedral with a copper dome.

The East Berlin Holocaust Memorial
The most powerful memorial I have encountered thus far, artist Kathe-Kollowitz's depiction of a mother holding her dead son is absolutely breathtaking. They sit alone in a concrete room with nothing but a small circular opening in the roof. On some days the sun shines in, on others, the rain and snow soaks them both.
This memorial to those who's writings were destroyed by the Nazis rests under a glass block in the middle of a square in front of the Humboldt Law building. You would never see it unless you already knew it was there, but the empty book shelves are an extremely simple yet appropriate dedication to past authors.
The Reichstag Building
One of our many stops on day 1 was the Reichstag building. According to my guide book "Built to house the German Parliament, the Reichstag was intended as a symbol of unity and to showcase the aspirations of the new German Empire, declared in 1871."
